Child and Youth Protection Committee Creates Sensory Labyrinth Promoting Non-Violence

The Child and Youth Protection Committee (CPCJ) of S. João da Madeira joined forces with a youth association, a school, a company, a shopping centre, and two theatre groups to launch a challenge to the city and the region in the form of an unusual and unexpected question: “What does yellow smell like?”

The aim is to spark curiosity and capture the public’s attention without revealing the mystery, which will only be unveiled to those who walk through the sensory labyrinth being created at the 8ª Avenida Shopping Centre in S. João da Madeira.

The inauguration of this “3-in-1” space—exhibition, installation, and performance—is scheduled for November 25, on the ground floor of the shopping centre, in a store next to the children’s area. It will remain open to the public until December 6 and can be visited free of charge.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience different sensations (visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory) which, in a playful and educational way, evoke various family experiences of children and young people, from a perspective of raising awareness for non-violence.

“We propose contradictory sensations while walking through this Labyrinth. It is an unusual, sensory proposal that creates a space for confrontation, but also for reflection and dialogue, around an almost common, stereotyped issue that affects us as a community,”
says Paula Gaio, President of the Child and Youth Protection Committee of S. João da Madeira.

The Sensory Labyrinth, which gives shape to this awareness campaign, is the result of a co-production between CPCJ, Associação Ecos Urbanos, the Dr. Serafim Leite School Group, and CEI – Companhia de Equipamentos Industriais, Lda., with the support of the 8ª Avenida Shopping Centre, the Grupo Oliveirense de Teatro Amador (GOTA), the Grupo de Teatro Oliveira Júnior (TOJ), as well as other institutions and companies.

The visit of the President started at 16.30 with a brief presentation of the company held by directors Eng. Álvaro Gouveira, Eng. Agostinho da Silva and Eng. Fernando Sousa.  After the presentation, the President had the opportunity to visit our installations in a guided tour.

To mark this event the CEI Team offered a souvenir, a piece made in Portuguese Stone of the Calcareos Moleanos family, in which pre-incisions were performed with a water jet. The incisions were joined with transparent resin in which color gold glitter were previously added.  Were further applied a few crystals of Swarovsky. This piece aims to associate the characteristics of innovative cutting and engraving equipment designed by us to the delicacy and precision of the traditional art of the goldsmith.

The visit was held under the "Roteiro para uma Economia Dinâmica," which begun in April this year with the aim of making known national companies who are examples of internationalization and export.

8th edition of the national contest "My school adopts a museum, a palace, a monument" took place on May 29, 2014, at  Museu da Chapelaria, in São João da Madeira.

The amplitheater at the museum was filled with children, young adults and teachers from various schools from north to south, who went to São João da Madeira for the awards ceremony and works exhibition opening, held at the same location.
